I'm finding the Bloglines interface to Usenet to be convenient. No newsreader software to setup, but it does track unread items. The links on the Bloglines site take you to the Google copy of this data (which I think is actually what it monitors for you), which gives you threading.

It's not perfect, no kill-files for example, but it does allow for light Usenet reading conveniently.
