Links to copyrighted material

I've recently seen (but couldn't tell in which node) an overzelous novice that posted a link to copyrighted material, I presume to some Perl CD Bookshelf available in the 'net. The post had been reaped due to its copyright-sensible nature. So far, so good.

After some time, I've seen here that (I suppose) similar links are used. Given the fact that I can't tell what the reaped link was about, is it correct to consider nodes such the above for editing, or am I totally misunderstanding it all?

You're correct. Linking to content that should not be public is frowned upon here. One minor nit: in most countries all content is automatically copyrighted. The issue is with the distribution licenses. The CD Bookshelf does not allow for public distribution, so IMO the links should be removed. On the O'Reilly Contacts page, there is an address provided to report infringements or "[r]eport illegal use of [their] books and materials online".... Just FYI.	[reply]

/me shrugs I'm not the police, and if O'Reilly wants to find online copies of the bookshelf, a quick google search will work well enough (there don't appear to be many, in any case). The same sort of thing was posted on #perl on irc.freenode.org recently. I decided to help the guy out by warning him about the firey torment that awaits his eternel soul. The conversation ended with several people informing me that I am a "jackass." I really have to remember to stay off IRC! -sam	[reply]
