in reply to This best sums up my view on xmas lights

I use Christmas lights, white, non-blinking for lighting my room year round. Or I did for years anyway. Tore em all down to paint and haven't put em back up yet. Soft gentle lighting all around the room. Lovely.

You know, that's not a half-bad idea. Connect 'em up to X10 controllers.. now to see if I can remember this after xmas when they all go on discount!

Good Gracious! I have all those lights in a big box with my sample x10 controller right on the top of the pile and I never once thought about putting them together! Oh man what a goofus I am! Imagine me kicking myself (which also requires you to imagine me a lot skinnier and a quite a bit more flexible than I currently am too). Now I can't wait to get home and tinker with em.

Now you've just gotta CPAN ControlX10::* or X10::* (depending on your interface) and set 'em all up to be controlled with perl! Hrm, evil ideas are coming forth with that extra firecracker module I've got.. *now to go find an unused external com port...*

Where would I get one of these sample X10 controllers that I hear so much about?

Anybody ever check out Mister House? A very cool voice activated home automation program written entirely in perl. Same code runs on Win32 and Linux. It could certainly spice up the Christmas lights...

      Dave
Indeed I have, and I have a MisterHouse box running at home. It has some drawbacks (IMHO it's not particularly well written, and it's certainly ill-documented), but Bruce has done a fine job of updating it frequently and he responds to suggestions very well.
Wow. More X-10 users. Cool. I'm thinking about bulding an X-10 app for X11 running on OS X...
