"Watching" (and possibly "ignoring") threads

WRT my own question contained in Q: re CB, but on a more speculative basis, I'd like to add that I -for one- would appreciate very much if there was a means to be notified when posts appear in some selected threads (other CMSes provide such functionality).

I've heard about rss feeds for PM, but this is an external service, and I'd rather prefer to have it as a builtin feature. Is there any project in this sense.

A somewhat related feature would be that of allowing one to ignore completely selected threads as well - but this must be thought of, and is by far less useful in the context of a web forum.

Maybe it's just that I've been used to the news and while USENET's interface is in itself much more raw than that of a web site, newsreaders plainly provide these facilities...

Occasionally I do put them in my browser{'s,s'} bookmarks, but of course that doesn't show wether there are new replies either.

Is there a reason that Recently Active Threads is not sufficient for the purpose?

Incidentally tracking replies to nodes is not as easy as it sounds. Theres a lot of subtle issues associated to it that arent so easy to resolve.

Well, Recently Active Threads is a handy resource and I do use it, but it's not quite the same thing. The obvious difference is the common one between push and pull UIs.

Indeed, I hope not to have conveyed the impression I thought it to be different. I can imagine full well that it wouldn't be an easy task. I was just wondering wether there were any ongoing project in that direction...

      BTW: nice .sig!
