Fellow monks,

As some of you may know I am from New Orleans. I am happy to let you know that myself, garliqua, and providencia and our loved ones have survived.

I am sorry to say, my home, my box, and my books did not survive. If you are interested to see pictures they are here. That Dell Precision 340 had a gig and a half of ram, 2.4 gig processor, and 2 120 gig drives stuffed with what feels like my life's work. I have a mountable backup image of the main drive but the second drive is a gone pecan. <insert expletive here> The September 13th shots are mostly my house. The satelite data suggests there was 9.3 feet of water at my address (4600 S Tonti 70125). My house is the one with the redwood porch on the side of the house. Incidentally the porch formerly was on the front of the house and was our way in. My family and I are living with friends of friends in Thibodaux for the time being. Most of my clients are not doing business and providing me with work at present. I would be very excited to bid on any projects or take any sub-contracting work you may care to discuss. I can be mailed at nolaflash.com at the address designs (read that one spambot, hah!). For the last 3 years I have been mainly creating OOP Perl and PHP apps using mySQL and Class::DBI and my PHP port of CDBI.

My wife participates at BookCrossing.com and it occurred to me that some of you might have extra copies or older editions of books I lost to the flood of sewerage filled water (blech) and perhaps might be willing to help me out with rebuilding my library.

If so please send books to David Martin c/o Dianna and Red Constant, 426 Camellia Dr., Thibodaux LA 70301 . I don't care about the condition or edition number of the books as long as they are not filled with poop smelling flood waters.

Here is what I know is ruined: O'Reilly Titles

CGI Programming with Perl
Learning XML

I could order the entire list of O'Reilly titles as new books using my author discount. I won't have office staff to sort that out until tomorrow, but I'm sure it won't be more than $200 or so for me to buy the replacements.

That leaves only the non-O'Reilly titles and miscellaneous books.

Be sure to read my standard disclaimer if this is a reply.

      Merlyn,

I am stunned. This is overwhelming generosity. I have tears in my eyes.

      Thank you,

      David

    Hi jerrygarciuh,

You may want to check out DIYParts.org for hardware.
People trade and give away parts and sometimes full systems.
Have a look on the site and see what people have to offer.
    Requests are welcome too.

    All the best.

    Martin

If you read French, I can also help with two editions of O'Reilly Books : Learning Perl (french translation <<Introduction à Perl>>) and Perl & XML (also a french edition). I know Merlyn gave you new O'Reilly books but maybe you have heard about other perl mongers around you who might be interested. If it's the case, just let me know : I have them ready to send anytime. Hope your life will be back to normal soon. cheers, EJ
Thank you very much for the offer. I believe there is a copy of Perl and XML en route and my French has suffered over the years, at least that is what the girls tell me.

      Thank you for your kindness.
