Have You Heard of Me?

by grantm (Parson)
on Jun 30, 2006 at 00:55 UTC ( [id://558485]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

If so, you may be able to help me. If not, sorry for intruding into your day.

I will shortly* be giving a presentation on Free Software at a conference of 10-12 year old kids. One subject that I'd like to touch on is the community aspect of Free Software. In particular, the fact that Free Software authors are 'known' to many people around the world that they have never met and probably never will meet.

I'd like to illustrate this point with a montage of photos of people who've used software, or read articles or forum posts that I've written. It's not intended to be some big ego trip - it's the 'community' I want to illustrate rather than the 'me'.

So, if you have ever heard of me and if you'd like to help, could you please send me an email at grantm @ cpan.org, with the following:

  • Your name
  • Your location
  • A passport-style photo (attachment or URL) - doesn't need to be bigger than say 120x120 pixels (but I'll resize/crop as needed)

I promise not to use your image for any purpose other than the montage described above.

If you're not sure if you've encountered me or my work before then some of the links on my home node might jog your memory.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

*Limbic~Region pointed out that I should define 'shortly'. But if I told you it was one month from now (which it is) then you might think "I have a month to do that" and then you might forget. So let's pretend I never said that. :-)

Maybe if you listed your modules you'd get more responses. Don't know about others, but I usualy notice the author of a module only if I need to contact him/her because of a bug report, fix or a feature request. And even then I usualy do not remember the author even a few days later.

    XML::Simple? You bet!

Great idea ... not really a photo but feel free to use the image and other info from my [id://derby|home node].

or forum posts that I've written.

It's kind of hard to deny that I've read the posting I'm now replying to :)

You may use the (very old) photo from my home node. I'm way too lazy to find and upload a new one :)

I think you may get a lot more response without the photo requirement, and it might be more interesting to note the people that you know, instead of who know you. "I know at least 100 different people that I've never met" sounds a lot less like an ego trip than "There are at least 100 different people that I've never met, who know me".

Best idea is to define the open source work of kids and then expand on that.

I wasn't sure (actualy was pretty doubtful) I had heard of you, but when I looked at your list of modules, I have to say yes!

I have used XML::Simple on a lot of different projects so feel free to use my photo from my home node.

If it matters to your presentation, I have used your module to improve or test different things on two Spacecraft that I work for. The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Space Technology 5 (ST5) missions. You can use the JPGs given on my website for those missions.
