I think a C-style for loop would be appropriate here:

my @names = ('rita', 'sue','bob', 'daisy'); for (my $i = 0; $i < @names; ++$i) { print $names[$i], ' ', ($names[$i+1] || ''), "\n"; }
Output:
rita sue sue bob bob daisy daisy
