Earthquakes & Perlmonks

Wondering if your favorite Perl monk or monkette is in danger from the latest earthquake? Now you can easily tell if a quake has occurred near someone you care about.

The Official Stats Whore(tm) is proud to announce The Big Monk Quake Map. This exciting new feature overlays semi-real time USGS data on to a map, along with all the monks who have MonkTags(tm). In addition, the epicenter markers are clickable (using patented 1-Click technology), taking you directly to the USGS information page for that event. Truly Amazing...

The USGS data is updated once an hour, assuming their site actually responds. The map plots the last 10 events, and as mentioned, contains links to the USGS report on the event.

There is no button on the Ever-growing Massive Button Bar(tm) on the left, so if you forget where to find it, check the News page.

Next month: Real time storm tracking overlays... NOT!

But, Oh Stats Master, what about earthquakes so bad, that the Monk's latitude & longitude changes. 8)

Darn! I'm dissapointed. We had an earthquake here in Japan just Monday (Feb 26th), a moderate 5.8, just enough to wake me up, and it's already left the friggin' map. I hadn't realized how many earthquakes there are every week (about 20, it seems). It'd be cool if Earthquakes less than 4 (or whatever can be felt) could be skipped or something. That's all on the USGS side of things of course, I'm just being noisy.

Stats Horiscopes

Not to be greedy, but browsing through the site gave me an idea. Could we put the monk's astrological sign next to his birthday?? :) (both chinese and zodiac, of course). Of course, if you comply, oh mighty maker of the stat's smack, we would then need clickable horiscopes for the day! :) (oh and a graph of zodiac sign population, and ... etc :) ).

    Ciao,
    Gryn

p.s. I do like the earthquake thing alot, but how does one tell the magnitude?

You know, the idea of a storm track overlay might not be a completely bad idea...

In my area there is a winter storm watch from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning. And probably some snow in between. :-)
