    There is only one "Dr"
    William Hartnell
    All the others are re-generations!

Tom Baker is my nostalgic choice, being the first Doctor I found....

But I voted for Christopher Eccleston, because the man can act.

Wait! This isn't a Parachute, this is a Backpack!
I do have to agree. PLAIN dress for one. But boy... did that Doctor have PROBLEMS. Major mental problems. FANTASTIC!

    M-x doctor, of course!
Re: The best Doctor:

Hmm - tricky one this. I see the recent series (Eccleston and Tennant) as so very different from what went before it's comparing apples and elephants. The old doctors had to make do with such crappy sets (I believe at one time the budget for scenery was two hundred GBP/episode), they had to play it tongue in cheek. The new doctors take themselves much more seriously.

If I have to choose one, it has to be Baker (Tom, not Colin), with Troughton getting an honourable mention. Of the recent two, I'd give Tennant the edge - Eccleston is a touch too grumpy. But both are good, and the difference in writers is more significant - give me Steven Moffat over Russell T. Davies any day.

    Polonius
You must have been too young! and missed the early episodes with William Hartnell in the 60’s the black and white filming gave a claustrophobic and atmospheric feel the Daleks were really scary then, they seem almost comical now in the 00’s by comparison!

      Gavin
I remember seeing a Tom Baker episode and realizing that one of the props was a humidifier we had, except it was painted gold in an attempt to make it look like a piece of computing machinery. Ah, the days of aluminum foil covered boxes. Cue the analog synths and the dramatically slowly walking monsters.
      perl -e 'split//,q{john hurl, pest caretaker}and(map{print @_[$_]}(joi +n(q{},map{sprintf(qq{%010u},$_)}(2**2*307*4993,5*101*641*5261,7*59*79 +*36997,13*17*71*45131,3**2*67*89*167*181))=~/\d{2}/g));'
      > give me Steven Moffat over Russell T. Davies any day.

      Yup.

Though I don't agree about Eccleston being grumpy - far from it. And I find Tennants endless gurning annoying.

A couple of excellent stories like 'Fathers day', 'The Empty child' and 'Dalek' but a lot of the new Doctors stories are not very good and are often derivative.

Also I think the new Doctor Who stories are adversely affected by the BBC's endless multi-cultural political bias. The Madame Pompadore story where her best friend was of African descent was a classic example. A multi-cultural 18th Century - amazing.

Though I don't agree about Eccleston being grumpy - far from it. And I find Tennants endless gurning annoying.

You know, I may have done Eccleston an injustice. The funny thing is, although it's not very long since I've seen them, I actually don't remember his performances very well. (That probably says more about my incipient senility than about him - and I do remember being blown away by The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances.) I should make a point of watching him again.

I still had to vote Tom Baker, even though Sylvester McCoy was awesome. It was his scriptwriters who sucked more than half the time! =sigh=

You forgot about Dr. House. It must be lupus then.

I also had to vote for Tom Baker, because he was the first Doctor I had found.

    Care for a Djelibebi?

But there were none I really disliked.

It *was* funny to see Barty Crouch as the Doctor; and the episode where Moaning Myrtle was a paving stone.
No Peter Cushing?
by macrobat (Beadle) on Jul 04, 2007 at 21:30 UTC
Peter Cushing isn't on the list. From the movie Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. I'm not saying he's the best (although I'm fond of his work for Hammer), but he should at least be an option.
Since McGann made the list I think you are right, Cushing should have been on the list too. I remember my dad took me to see this film in 1982 or 1983. At the time I liked it because it (ergo the Daleks) were in color, and at the time we only had a small black and white TV.

    I voted for McCoy.

But I thougt his first names were Leonard Horatio "Bones".
    Who was Sylvester McCoy?
    Who is the real McCoy?

I went for Jon Pertwee as he was the one around when I was a child of suitable scared age.

They all have their pluses and minuses and one of the good things is that the new incarnations don't have to be like the previous. Makes for some really good fun when the supporting actors haven't changed.

    Hi All
Great poll; I voted for Tom Baker mostly because he was the first Dr, that I had started watching in the 80's when it first made the US. But I have to say Chris Eccleston realy gave it a run for the money. Very gritty.
I have really been enjoying the new episodes.

Personally, I was thinking more of Dr. Teeth :-)
Ha! My wife and the boys recently got me a "Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem: World Tour '78" t-shirt from Target. They kept asking me to act like Animal.

        Or the Swedish Chef.

Funny, I didn't know any of them but Doctor Who?, and even then mostly as a cultural phenomenon - which is why my vote was cast on that. And then Dr. House, mentioned by Trizor, but to be fair I've never ever really watched a single episode after all.

If it were for me, the best doctor is The Doctor. Eventually, rumors are that some Perl 7 code is hidden deep inside his holographic subroutines. Probably this is much more relevant to his outstanding personality than is generally acknowledged.

Funny, I didn't know any of them but "Doctor Who?"

They are the actors that played the various incarnations of Doctor Who's Doctor.

        No, really?
        :P

Cannot believe anyone voted for Sylvester McCoy. He was feeble.

Trivia point - some of Patrick Troughton's great-grandchildren are at school with my daughter!

I voted for Tom Baker as he was the first on that I saw on our local PBS channel, but I would give high props to Christoper Eccleston , Peter Davidson and Sylvester McCoy.

David Tennant isn't bad, but the scriptwriting seems a bit political for a kid's show. I honestly haven't seen enough of Tennant to give him a thumbs up or down.

"As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!". - Les Nesmith.
Actually, it was Mr. Carlson (played by the late Gordon Jump) who said that; and the newsman's name was Les Nesman.

But yeah, that might have been the funniest moment in TV history. Outside of politics, of course.

I voted for Mr. Eccleston, although Jon Pertwee is an incredibly close second (as the first Dr. I watched from the series). Paul McGann was great in the Fox movie, and who doesn't like Tom Baker? Anyone read the Marvel comic with him in it? One guy who wasn't on here was Peter Cushing, who played the Dr. in two early movies (and was the guy who got me started). Sorry he wasn't on the list!

    Nice work Petruchio!

Wasn't it "Peter Davison" (not "Peter Davidson") that followed on from Tom Baker ?

    I could be wrong ...

    Cheers,
    Rob
Or you might be right . . .

Whooo ... could be !! (Not unprecedented ... but happens only rarely :-)

        Cheers,
        Rob
Peter Davison played The Doctor between 1982-1984 according to the BBC.

I can't really decide which one is the best between Huxtable and (Patch) Adams. Beside being doctors, the former is a real entertainer, the latter is very humanist.

For dark humor, you can't go wrong with Dr. Strangelove. "They're polluting our vital bodily fluids!"

For old fogeys like me, there's also Dr. Kildaire and Dr. Ben Casey.

And if you enjoy comic books (I do), there's always Dr. Fate or Dr. Strange ...

And Dr. Demento! How could I Have forgotten him?

I doubt this would affect anyone's vote, but Richard Hurndall should also get a mention for his work playing the first doctor, as Hartnell had passed on at that point.
