My take on solution in Erlang:

-module(rosetta).
-compile(export_all).

test() ->
  lists:reverse(lists:foldl(fun rosetta/2, [], "ZYEEEEEABBCCCDDDDF")).

rosetta(H, [[H|T]|TT]) ->
  [[H,H|T]|TT];
rosetta(H, L) ->
  [[H]|L].
