On page 13 of this technical report regarding the 2007 International Contest on Functional Programming it is stated that
Perl is a fine tool for many applications.
since the United Coding Team of Cape Town S. Africa used it for their solution. In fact, they had first place for most of the way until Team Smartass (the Google team which won last year) made a huge surge at the end.
