rich_d_thomas has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:
Hi,
I'm not sure where this query is best posted, so I thought I'd start here first. I use the "perl -MCPAN -e shell" method of installing modules quite a lot and am a big fan of doing it that way because it works out and installs any necessary dependencies. I have had trouble with the CPAN shell accessing ftp.perl.org I have only had trouble accessing it from our server in France, it's fine accessing it from the UK. I have also been able to access other FTP sites from the server in France. I have been narrowing down the problem to be something to with with DNS. When I do an nslookup from my PC in the UK, I get: C:\Windows\System32>nslookup ftp.perl.org Server: cache2.ntli.net Address: 194.168.8.100:53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: ftp.cpan.ddns.develooper.com Addresses: 134.147.32.33, 147.251.48.205 Aliases: ftp.perl.org From my PC at home, I can FTP to the IP addresses that ftp.perl.org has resolved to above. When I do an nslookup from the server in France, I get: # nslookup ftp.perl.org Server: 213.186.33.99 Address: 213.186.33.99#53 Non-authoritative answer: ftp.perl.org canonical name = ftp.cpan.ddns.develooper.com. Name: ftp.cpan.ddns.develooper.com Address: 195.220.60.30 From my PC at home, I am unable to FTP to the IP address that ftp.perl.org has resolved to above. As the resolved IP addresses are different, then this must be the area that the problem is with. What I don't know is if it's a problem that ftp.perl.org needs to sort out or the ISP of the French server or maybe the administrator of 213.186.33.99 Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, as I really don't know who is responsible for what in the world of DNS. Thanks in advance. Richard.
