HELP!

Currently having trouble with a statistical type problem in one of my perl programs. Take a look at my scratchpad.

Perl/Programming

Well I'm not what you'd call a seasoned programmer, but I'm not new to programming either. I guess I've been writing code here and there for about 20 years (since I was 9 on an apple ][+). I've had explierence with *cough*Apple Basic*cough*, Pascal, Modula 2, COBOL, Assembly(VAX), FoxPro, Visual Basic, C and now Perl. I would not consider myself a master of any.

Perl has wound up being my favorite language. It takes the tediousness out of writing code in a language like C. It has a better design and features compared to VB. And for the others, I think they speak for themselves.

So Perl has become my language of choice. I think it's more of an obsession than a choice though. I spend entirely to much time here, but I think I've learned a lot since walking through the gates. I love to help people and I love to learn. Two things you can do quite a bit of here. Usually at the same time. I've read quite a few questions that I had no clue as to the answer, but they caught my attention enough to figure out (instead of doing real work). So I learned something and so did someone else through my help. Call me twisted, but I love that.

Things you should look at:

wxPerl - The port of wxWindows to Perl. It's a cross platform GUI toolkit. The really nice thing is that it uses the native graphics libs on the respective systems. So it uses the Win32 windowing stuff on windows, GTK if you have it and Motif if that's your platform. It also runs on OS/2 and MacOS. I personally hope this becomes the Perl GUI toolkit of choice.

Mono - Yes, I know this isn't Perl. But it's the beginning of an attempt to port the .NET platform to Linux. That could mean a (new|better|different) platform to run perl on. Some feel it's a mistake.. but regardless of your opinion. It would be worth while to watch it's progress.

SharpDevelop - Currently an IDE for C#. But it looks like this is going to be the IDE for Mono also.. which means it will hopefully support Perl in the future. Even though it's beta .75 right now, it's better than a lot of other editors I've seen. This is going to be very nice when it's done.
