For #2, you can install smolder_smoke_signal manually, it doesn't need any Smolder modules (at least last I looked), but this is a Smolder problem. It'd be nice if the client was available as a separate distro. I'm not sure what the tar problem was. SmokeRunner::Multi just uses Archive::Tar internally.
