My book, Higher-Order Perl, is now available for download. If you wanted to read it before, but didn't, here is a good opportunity.

If you didn't want to read it, then at least your situation has not gotten any worse.

The complete text is available here.

More information about the book is here.

    Frodo: Gandalf, you're late
Gandalf: A wizard is never later

It's great to see a that it's now available for free, for example for looking up some algorithms or techniques (for reading front to back I still prefer dead wood).

      A wizard is never late.

That's from Peter Jackson's movie. Tolkien's Gandalf knew when he was late, and apologized.

And that, Frodo, is the end of my account. May Elrond and the others forgive the length of it. But such a thing has not happened before, that Gandalf broke tryst and did not come when he promised. An account to the Ring-bearer of so strange an event was required, I think.

Dominus's account is near the end of his Higher Order Perl page.

I ran outta gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from outta town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake, a terrible flood, locusts. It wasn't my fault!! I swear to God!!

Great news, Dominus. Thanks for making it available. I bought HOP when it first came out and still consider it one of the best CS books I've ever read.

And I just finished a big batch job that uses a bunch of lazy-loading iterators as described in the early chapters. w00t!

I'm very happy to see this book come on-line. Its parsing chapter is the best basic introduction to parsing for someone coming from the Perl milieu. Mark's presentation of memoization is the best I've seen. The writing itself can be taken as a model, and I mean both the Perl and the technical English. Etc., etc.

As long as the Perl community is producing books like this, Perl is not dying.

    Many thanks, Mark

    Thanks Mark
Great book! I know the programmer before me used it as a reference for a lot of the iteration processing he used. It's nice to see the original with explanation.
I'll be using the pdf a bunch. Thanks again.

quote: " You may remember I wanted to turn the book into a wiki. That would have been awesome. But the ***book's fourth anniversary is coming up this spring*** and I have to admit to myself that I'm not gonna get the wiki together. So I'm posting the thing already."/quote

Is there a new version to come in spring (2009) ...?
    A little confused i am ...

    Thanks in Advance
    MH
The book was published in spring 2005, so its fourth anniversary is coming this spring.

I do not know of any new version that is coming in spring 2009.

Thx. Ups. I misread the word anniversary.
But its good to know that there is no new version coming out in a few months (cause i want the paperback edition now, not that i wouldnt welcome a new version of your book), this seems to be the case sometimes soon after i bought a book ;-).
