Red wine, with iocaine powder :P

I thought you had built up an immunity to iocane powder...

When it comes to wine, I prefer ... BEER!
<red_dwarf> It's never beer is it, its always wine! "What do you want on your cornflakes, darling?" "Oh, I'll have some wine, please!" Smeg! </red_dwarf>
Pint of bitter, please. Or stout.
      Mmm, beer... I'll second that.

I did manage to choose an option from the list to contribute to the vote, but generally, I'll take a beer. That said, it has to be an ale, not a lager; lager's for people who (for whatever reason) need to get drunk without their tastebuds noticing.

    certainly Riesling,
    ... is there any other?
Reisling is good; I like reisling. But a gewurtztraminer, for me at least, goes with food, with dessert, and with nothing but air.

Gewürztraminer (as we write it in german :-) is a wonderful wine with a more fruitier (!?) body. A decent Gerwürztraminer with some strong cheese - extraordinary!

What i like with Riesling is, that you can get so many different kinds of it - regarding of soil, micro climate and winemaker. I living near a small river (called "Nahe") were they grow wine for about 30 km. The most common grape is Riesling and they can be totally different if get them from different Winzer (= german for grape grower).

        enjoy your next bottle

Being a none drinker, there is only one wine that I ever touch these days, and that's the wine that enables me to run Windows programs on my Linux boxes.

OTOH, the Lord's Vineyard should produce some tasty drops...

And when I'm promoted to glory I'll be sure to try some.

I wouldn't mind some of that at $8 a gallon! Pity you can't get it for that price in the UK

Yeah, it's good mixed half and half with pop..... like the german's white wine and cola. Maybe red wine and Dr. Pepper? hmmm...have to try that. Been doing red wine and red zinger tea. :-)

The bottles are a hassle to return.... they should have 5 gallon pails with spigots available. ;- )

Over the years, I would have collected enough empty gallon bottles to cement together a nice glass-walled house.

I love a good gewurtztraminer. It's good enough that, when in Germany, I will occaisionally have a glass instead of a German beer ... something I'd never have thought possible at one time.

      ....mine distilled

Is it legal in the UK and what does it taste like, Vermouth?

As far as I'm aware, there are no laws against distilling your own spirits. It's the same as brewing your own beer, or making your own wine. The laws only come into effect if you start selling it for a profit. Even then, I doubt the local bobbies will roll if you put half a dozen bottles of your Dandylion & Burdock up for sale at your local Bring&Buy.

As for the taste, it depends what you start with, but commercial Brandy is distilled wine, so that gives an idea of the possibilities.

Vermouth is a "fortified wine"--like Port, Sherry Maderia and Masala--which is just wine with the addition of a small percentage of spirit (often Brandy) to preserve it.

I prefer beer (real ale, Guiness or Newcastle Brown), but if I have to drink wine, I prefer it chilled - whether white or (draws huge breath) red.

To my mind, drinking real ale, Newcastle Brown or red wine at room temperature ought to be banned under the Geneva convention :D

A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))
Actually chilling your red wine is the right way to drink it. It should be drunk at "room temperature" which was defined before the time of central heating and was probably more like between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Not our present 22+ degrees Celsius.

      CountZero

A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James

Chilled real ale? No, no, no. Cellar temperature, slightly below room temperature. But not chilled. Never chilled.

Btw, there hasn't been any naturally conditioned Guinness (bottle or cask) for many years, anywhere, even Dublin (where sales are falling). Pasteurised (killed) and injected with nitrogen, I hate the stuff.

If anyone tells you that they like a certain pub because "they serve a nice pint of Guinness" then you know they don't know what they are talking about. It is all the same, Diageo ("the world’s biggest drinks group") has spent a lot of money making it that way. Weep.

      Nationalise the breweries!

Well, National was pretty good in Maryland, but the original brewer is gone....

"The Dog" "Broon" "Newkie", Newcastle Brown Ale.

the beer is actually a mixture of two ales - a stronger, dark brew and a lighter blend.

It's certainly well known, and a glass of 'Newkie Broon' goes down nicely if it's ice-cold and carefully poured so that the glass is always half full.

Indeed the makers of Newcastle Brown Ale are so concerned about the temperature their beer was served at that a heat-sensitive blue star is placed on the back label which changes colour with the temperature.

Newcastle Brown Ale is a serious business...

a heat-sensitive blue star is placed on the back label which changes colour with the temperature

        I have a "disappearing TARDIS" t-shirt like that. ;-)

        HTH,

        planetscape
but if I have to drink wine, I prefer it chilled - whether white or (draws huge breath) red

Trust me. "Room temperature" red wine in the heat of Israeli summer (30-40C) is not something you want to drink.

      Best, beth

For myself, Chianti, without hesitation. If the wife is joining me, Johannesburg Riesling. But if switching to beer, one of:
    • Sam Adams Light
    • Newcastle Brown Ale
    • Guinness Stout
    depending on the situation.

I like dry wines, had a nice New Zealand dry Reisling at weekend. A good Muscadet sur lie on a hot day.

I love real ciders though. Proper stuff, not too strong or rough but still, unpasturised and made with apples. (Perry is good too, the real stuff again). A local producer makes one with rhubarb in it. Very nice on a hot day.

    I like some ales.

I spirits, a good aged rum or metaxa, calvados, cognac.

Nobody could accuse you of being teetotal then!

I experimented briefly with running Pegasus Mail in Wine, but it was such a pain, I ended up just switching to Gnus. VMWare is okay if the host system runs a twelve-year-old OS that you never upgrade ever, but as soon as you start running kernel 2.4 or later on the host, you start running into problems, and I don't think there's any way to get VMWare installed on Linux 2.6.

As for the rest of that stuff, I'm not really in that socioeconomic class. Where I come from, there are two kinds of people with regard to alcohol: people who drink beer, and people who don't drink. For me, this has always been an easy decision, because I've never been even remotely tempted to put anything in my mouth that smells anywhere near as bad as beer. I don't really know about wine because, like I said, I'm not really in that economic bracket. We don't buy bottled water, either. I associate wine with hoity-toity people who use funny-shaped glasses that don't have a handle and like as not are actually made out of glass, wear fancy clothes to things other than weddings and funerals, never buy anything off the clearance rack, and probably have a membership at a country club. I'm more in the bracket that saves and re-uses plastic baggies and tries to only buy meat when it's on a pretty good sale.
