Also use qr to quote regular expressions instead of manually backslashing everything.

That's actually not necessary here. The OP was just escaping things that didn't need escaping.

$x = "<div class='roundedBoxBody'><p>"; $y = '<p>&nbsp;</p></p>';

Works just as well.
