We certainly wouldn't want to have any general questions about the wisdom of different approaches to problems here would we? lol. I found your reply slightly ironic because of your username, not that it is an issue, just tickled my funny bone.

Ah, so if I want to seek advice on how to repair a leaking roof, or how to raise kids, Perlmonks is the appropriate forum?

Are you gonna be repairing the roof using Perl?

Enjoy the last years of Rome.

If your gonna write a program to do it then maybe ;). He asked a programming/design related question that wasn't specific to a programming langauge (though he could have just assumed that it was going to be written in perl). I think this might be on the border of being OT, but it certainly isn't the first instance of someone seeking advice when searching for a solution to a problem. The OP didn't ask how to do it in JAVA, or something completely unrelated to computers so I don't see this as OT. I think that the community here is generally open to working on solutions even if they aren't 100% perl related, and some of us even enjoy that, its not as if we are being inundated by non-perl questions in which case the guidlines might end up being stricter. Either way you are free to simply not reply to any questions.

I certainly hope that perlmonks remains a place that individuals can come to their peers for assistance and direction even when not 100% perl related.
