A logo for Perl

by sri (Vicar)
on Jun 21, 2010 at 16:46 UTC ( [id://845773]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Here are five versions of a Perl logo i've been working on, based on Larrys camelia.

Perl 5 (Amelia)
Perl 6 (Amelia)

Perl 5
Perl 6
The Perl Foundation

If there's enough interest i'll finish and release them under the appropriate open source license and in multiple formats/sizes.

Update: Added TPF logo.
Update 2: Added Amelia, Camelias psychedelic more commercial oriented little sister.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

I like those both; they're very nice.

They look good to me too. I wonder if the Rakudo folks would like a "Rakudo *" version? (And would it be available for all implementations, eg Yapsi, sprixel, etc., if they wanted it?)
Of course, the images would be open sourced as svg/canvas.

But why a butterfly? What's wrong with the Camel? Isn't a "camelia" a rose? Am I missing something here?

      What's wrong with the Camel?

O'Reilly holds the trade mark for the Camel used in connection with the Perl programming language. It's a pity that the most wildly recognized symbol for an open source programming language suffers such legal restrictions. (But to be fair it's O'Reilly that come up with the Camel, to the best of my knowledge).

Camelia is the name of the Perl 6 mascot, which you can adore on http://perl6.org/.

Perl 6 - links to (nearly) everything that is Perl 6.

Yes of course, I forgot it's owned by O'Reilly. A true pity:(

A camel would be nice. The number of humps might indicate the version ;)
I've heard of washboard abs but a washboard back?

Nice, though maybe the version number doesn't stand out enough, especially the "6"? What do others think?

You might also want to create black and white versions suitable for print when you get a chance.

BTW, are there any potential legal issues with Microsoft's butterfly logo for MSN, etc.?

Elda Taluta; Sarks Sark; Ark Arks

These are just first drafts, i was expecting to refine (or even redraw) them based on feedback from the Perl 6 decision makers.
Everything would have been possible, sadly there is no interest and i'm giving up now, the logos will not get finished.

I'm sorry to hear that, I think your design showed a lot of promise. Is this a case of nobody in a position of influence wanting to hurt Larry's feelings? Because the current logo is just awful. Unprofessional, ugly, it reinforces many of the unfortunate negative stereotypes about perl that I hear from other programmers. And I really think the official logo for Perl 6 should really be something that's open to debate

Out of historic curiosity, is there a way to find the post linked pictures that are all 404 in 2023? Was the Amelia project replaced by the Raptor? Thanks

        From that page:

"No offense, but Larry's official Perl6 logo is one of the ugliest logos in the history of logos. Almost every recent, major programming language in the world has a clean and well-designed logo (ruby diamond, python snakes, etc.). And then there's Camelia (which, by the way, is the name of a sanitary napkin here in Germany) which looks like it was done by a 3-year old on LSD who was given a set of crayons with every color in the world. I can already hear the jokes from outside the Perl community: Ah well, now finally your unprofessional logo fits your unprofessional line-noise-like language. Excuse me for getting all emotional but it appears that the core folks still haven't realized how bad Perl's marketing really is/has become. People judge books by their cover and so do most decision makers which dictate what language their company is gonna use. Giving Perl6 an unprofessional, childish appearance with a logo that could well be the logo of a local Kindergarten group isn't gonna help! No matter how likeable and cute it may appear to nerds!"

        No lies detected.

I thought they were going to swap logos when it became Raku but they kept Larry's MS Paint monstrosity. I'm also kinda surprised the people that worked on it from the early days don't have mild PTSD from seeing the P 6 stamped on Camelia's wings.

As a logo, a simple, 'Raku ware' style cup, small tea bowl, sake cup, etc. with a small, gold-filled crack would have been attractive, actually represent the language's namesake, and even given a nod to how much the entire project had been through over the almost 20 years before it became "Raku." The image I've always had in my head is simple enough to scale down to an icon in color and even looks decent in black and white for print. Also would have given devs a canvas to color or decorate the cup in an attractive way to fit their project's style or theme; only requiring the cup's basic shape and crack remain uniform..

I had links to a few old examples I had in mind but can't post links without an account, I guess. Just "Tough beans." when I post. I'd even buy a decent, official Raku lang-themed sake-- uh, I mean coffee cup set to sip 'coffee' from and I don't even write Raku anymore.

To my (non-artistic) mind, it's a pity that these were not developed further and perhaps adopted.
They seem to be very fitting for Perl...

I don't know if you are still scanning this for feedback, but I really like the energy in the Amelia logo. The others seem flat in comparison and not just because the are less commercial. One gets more of a feeling up "up and away" with Amelia.

I hope you haven't given up entirely on this. Today I just finished rereading "Horton hears a Hoo" - sometimes it really does take a small voice who hasn't been heard before to make a real change. Until people listen it really can feel dim, but that doesn't mean you are wrong or have something that shouldn't be put into the lime light.
