Thanks to this poll, I now know what Rakudo Star is, so that's something. I got the impression that I also need to set up a Parrot VM in order to implement it? So now I know what Parrot is (kind-of). This is way too much information to learn in one day!

Perhaps when I have 2 weeks of free time, I'll give it a whirl. In other words, probably never...

    Rakudo Star includes Parrot. Parrot's a virtual machine in the "It runs instructions" sense, not in the "It's a complete operating system" sense.

[davido]: ok, on my ubuntu system getlogin grabs from /proc/self/ loginuid (per strace)
[tye]: disable /proc and then see what it does?
[davido]: then it reads from /etc/passwd to decide who my uid is.
[davido]: sorry, typed that before you asked me to disable proc
[davido]: but you stumped me; don't know how to disable proc.
[tye]: I don't know if you can just dismount, but I thought so.
[davido]: yeah, umount -f isn't powerful enough.
