I don't think those are the only two reasons for open source. I use Linux because I like it better than windows, and i like that security issues can be found and addresses by lots of people because its not a closed source. Perl is open source, i don't use it because its free, and i like that its opensource because that keeps it moving forward. Just seems like an error in your reasoning to think that the only reasons people want open source is to edit it, or get it free.

What, you mean, no security issues are found in non-open source?

Open source does not imply things move forward - there's ton of open source software that doesn't. There's also tons of closed source software that does move forward. The same with security. Just because it's "open" doesn't mean there are less security issues (hello sendmail).

Just seems like an error in your reasoning to think that the only reasons people want open source is to edit it, or get it free.
Actually, I think you are the one with an error in your reasoning. You're making a classical X-Y error. You want X, and you think Y (and only Y) is giving you that.

What, you mean, no security issues are found in non-open source?

Where in the world did you read that?

My issue was with your assumptions and you turned around and put words in my mouth too. That gets very frustrating.
