in reply to I think Casey West is right

Based on questions I've seen answered today, I think that is wrong. Beginners do get basic questions answered.

But, just like someone must wear a dinner jacket to dine at a "nice" club while McD will take anyone wearing shoes, the poster must compose himself properly to be taken seriously: write sensable English, state his level, and explain the problem.

I am amused that someone who apparently cannot spell "sensible" is willing to criticize the quality of English in a post with no grammar errors or spelling mistakes.

As for the analogy you made, I thought this was closer to McDonalds than a private club. OK, so we have things we can do about the occasional solicitor and other people in need of basic toilet training. Well so does McDonalds. But if you are interested in Perl, you don't need a reservation and you don't need to wait for a table. As for dress, well half of us are in jeans and t-shirts already so come as you are.

That is how I thought this place was. It is certainly how I want it to be. If it isn't how people want this place to be, then perhaps I should take up chess and hang out with the bums in Washington Sq Park. That sounds like more fun than listening to people pontificate about what others need to do to deserve to be in their presence.

As for beginner questions, well yesterday a perfectly reasonable question didn't get answered. It got deleted. Looking at the question, I don't think that it should have been. It was written in correct English. It was polite. I can visualize people I respect saying that. I don't have reason to believe that the asker was in any way stupid or unworthy.

OK, so the asker did not know about tools that a lot of us do. But we have lots of questions like that. Should ignorance be punished?

I hang around here enough that I can say with some certainty that pants are optional. :)
