"They've got a cave troll!"

by Argel (Prior)
on Jul 23, 2011 at 02:23 UTC ( #916265=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

So I'm writing here after seeing three not so lovely new posts in the Meditations section by our new troll in residence. It's just engaging enough to trick our normally competent Monks into feeding it more attention. Yeah chromatic and jdporter, I'm definitely looking at you two right now. And Anonymous Monk of course. My eyes are darting to each and every one of you! (^_^)

So, I'd like to mention, yet again, the wisest of all advice for dealing with our new refuse ingesting, fly infested, wallowing in its own waste, "guardian" of the bridge.

Do Not Feed the Trolls!!!

And for good measure: Blocking users. And an additional recommendation-- downvote everyone who feeds the troll attention. Even responses to what appear to be reasonable sounding posts. Because they're not. They're just a way to lure victims in. And everyone should see that by now.

Hope everyone has a good weekend! Yes, even the troll -- because it doesn't get any better than good deeds happening to evil creatures! (^_^)

You know that a separate thread about troll feeding counts as a meta win for the trolls, don't you?

downvote everyone who feeds the troll attention.
So, you're saying I should downvote your post?
      > So, you're saying I should downvote your post?

Indeed, and you are now feeding the "meta" troll ... :-P

      Cheers Rolf

You're not thinking this through very well. Trolls crave direct, interactive attention. My OP is an indirect response. So is downvoting. Think a troll is going to stick around if the only response it gets are downvotes? Or even if I posted the OP a couple times a week? Especially if I took the names out and put in the best tricks for hiding nodes, etc?

Bottom line, is if other Monks listen and start ignoring ALL of its posts, then odds are better the troll will leave (or adjust behavior). And if not, then this post is just a drop in the bucket compared to torrential rain from the people who actually directly respond to him it. [<--- Gah!! Such a ghastly mistake!!! (^_^;) I shall atone!! (X_X) ]

Sound advice and a nice LOTR quote too :)

Sound advice and a nice LOTR quote too :)

OMFG its a mindblowing anagram LOTR -> TROL

      a nice LOTR quote

Should you mean the signature bit then you are mistaken - that is from an entirely different universe.

I was referring to the post title, in quotation marks:

        "They've got a cave troll!"

[marto]: my desktop is a core2 duo, 120GB SSD, 4GB RAM, boots to (GUI) login in less than 10 seconds from cold start

[marto]: whent he boys start school I'll build myself as new machine, ryzen based
[Corion]: marto: That's cool! I think my (home) desktop spends 30 seconds in the BIOS...
[Corion]: marto: Heh - currently they seem promising, but I think I'll stay with nVidia+Intel for the time being, as I've been bitten too often by bad AMD drivers
Discipulus is (still?) not a big fan of notepad++
