in thread Why PM needs web stats

PM has had a philosophy of avoiding cookies, javascript, etc. and I do not see how GA fits into that. Would it really be that hard to track some of this info ourselves? Does E2 already have something in place that we are just not using? What about our hosting service? Do they provide any tools or reports?

GA was just one of two proposed options the other being using an open source tool on the server like piwik or AWStats or even something else. I have no answers for your other questions.

It has no such policy. The proof? The 'userpass' cookie on this 'ere machine.

A sensible policy is to avoid making javascript and cookies etc a *requirement* unless they are absolutely necessary. Those oddballs who have a browser that doesn't do Javascript, or who choose not to run it, won't lose out. And the paranoiacs who don't accept cookies can still look at the site without logging in.

Of course, but you see no-other cookies.

If in firefox, Start privacy mode, ctrl+shift+p, visit perlmonks, view a few nodes, view your cookies, observe no cookies of any kind

      ... oddballs ... paranoiacs ...
