I am working on an external method of accomplishing this. Unfortunately it will be limited to only checking for new replies and not content change. This is because there is no easy way to tell if a node has been modified without getting a checksum of the node. That would require recursive processing and the benefit doesn't come close to added strain to the server. I am currently tracking this thread, so if it works, I will update in a little while with the very pre-alpha version.
