I did a chess move validator in C. Did it in the hardest, most bug prone, and least efficient way, too. (A chess board is small enough that it's practical to build a lookup table of all possible moves with O(1) efficiency, and with a pretty low constant, too. I was trying to do it on the fly.) At the moment, I'm writing some bloging code because I don't like the way everyone else's blogging code does things.
