In fact, I just revisited that code and noticed that
lhoward made another valuable comment there, namely, just applying that magic to monks with XP less than 50. Other monks should know better and use the <CODE> tags.
That code is still some heuristic hack and I don't know how it would stack up in the real world here, maybe I'll do some local checking against nodes that don't have formatted code ...

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
