Same problem here:
% uname -srm
Linux 2.6.10ALiENkeRnel i686
% echo $TERM
xterm
If I set the terminal type to vt220... same problem (using PuTTY).
Also fails on NetBSD 2.0, with aterm (TERM type of either rxvt or vt220).
