I have just published an article describing how to implement a MySQL proxy server with Philip Stoev's DBIx::MyServer.
Using that, you get the power of Perl in the query management, thus you can filter queries, replace them, manipulate result sets, add macros to the SQL language, execute shell commands, and even using PostgreSQL or SQLite tables as if they were MySQL ones, all from an unsuspecting MySQL client.
