Buk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

This place is unusable as a pre-novice.

You cannot vote. And it is completely opaque as to what one can do to gain sufficient Xp in order to make this place usable.

So, If I have ever helped you out; or taught you something that you did not know; please upvote this post and render this ID usable for me; given that my ID of 10+ years standing, and considerable recognition, has been rendered useless by a demogodic shithead that has been holding this place back for a decade or more.

While I am happy to support (without quite understanding what's going on), I think this is completely the wrong approach. Whatever disagreements are going on, it is not acceptable to just disable your account at will. (And any new one could suffer the same.)

So I request that your account gets re-enabled (if it has been dis-abled and not a technical glitch being the cause after all, in which case additional swearing on your side is counterproductive).

There are some more gods around, aren't they?

Whatever disagreements are going on, it is not acceptable to just disable your account at will.

Really, I'm not nearly so stupid as to try to ban BrowserUk. I woke up this morning and the first thing I saw on PerlMonks was a private message from Buk asking if I had banned him. It was only later that I saw for the first time BrowserUk's rant. It is a holiday here and I was dead asleep for the entire duration of the rant and supposed intrigue that followed, not waking until over an hour after the accusation was /msg'd to me.

      - tye

        Tye,

You don't really need to reply to these messages. People who have been here for many years have seen posts from both of you and know what's what.

While buk has been very helpful in the past, more and more lately his posts have been insulting, pompous, ranting, gotta have the last word, right-fighting and downright loco paranoid. Did I miss anything? His posts have shifted from being helpful to harmful. In fact, his recent posts are so radically different than his past ones that this stinks of a masquerade attack.

From you I only remember logical/helpful posts. I didn't do any research, but I'm been here for many many years. I just thought I'd add my opinion for the sake of newcomers.

I wanted to upvote his post to help him vote again, until I read his last paragraph. No upvotes for silly nasty rubbish. And I find it hard to believe that its the good old buk. I wish we had the good old buk back. Its like the wheel is turning but the hamster's dead.

Of the 12 listed Gods of this place; only one has demonstrate the caprice, malevolence and shear demogodic gall to do it.

If I am wrong, I will wholeheartedly and sincerely apologise. But, as always, it willl take some form of proof, not just 'his-word-for-it', to convince me I am wrong.

That will undoubtably come acroos as a high degree of arogance, but when you are right most of the time -- as I tend to be -- when, for that minority of occasions when I am wrong, the accusation of such comes without proof, it is hard to acknowledge.

I seek not to have any say beyond one-man, one vote, in the running of this place, and have no aspirations for any position of authority; but I do challenge that the personal caprice of a single individual is suffice to render the opinons and preferences of all other monks, great and new completely inconsequential.

If you have an opnion, you have a right to a voice. Do not let it be suppressed by one, egotistical, manical, self-promotional old-git, who's only claim-to-fame is he found this place before you did.

Upvote this node, and exercise your perrogative.

Buk: Created 7:30am today, last here 9:38am. Recent posts at 8:27, 8:55, 9:24.

BrowserUk: Last here 8:40. That falls between Buk's 8:27 and 8:55 posts.

    Why the overlap?

The obvious conclusion is that the BrowserUK account has been hacked.

In which case, he (as we all) should appeal to the admins to rectify.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.
tye hasn't been here in 3 days, and his "gods" account hasn't had a login in quite some time. Your assessment that BrowserUk's account has been hacked is possible, and the most likely explanation. The alternate explanation is far worse -- that he is just stirring things up. I will go with the "been hacked" explanation and offer him a benefit of the doubt despite the rudeness of the recent diatribe.

This whole thing belongs in PerlMonks Discussion under the original thread though, not in Seekers of Perl Wisdom. I don't see any Perl wisdom sought here.

Is Buk an imposter/troll while BrowserUk is on vacation

          No. They were both me.

For the rest of your questions; I have no answers beyond: I guess I said too much.

I'm more than a little confused as well, and hope that it was just a glitch.

But as a comment on pre-novice usability, I didn't find this place unusable as a pre-novice. If you look at my account creation date, it was back in 2005, but I think my first post was within the past year and a half (everything was fine til then-- but I needed a bit of salt finally), so I was a pre-novice until very recently. While I've certainly noticed some friction among various users, I still find it very useful and relatively civil compared to a lot of other places on the interwebs.

Yeah, but the novice of today bares little resemblance to when BrowserUK was a novice. There was the huge XP overhaul (used to have what, maybe 10 ranks?), what rank you need to do various things has changed over the years, etc. Update: So not so hard to understand why it might be jarring.

"Amen!" to hdb's response... but and with the requested upvote for Buk (who helped lead me out of 'hopeless noob'-land and into the joys of semi-competence),

It's also with the hope that we've merely seen a glitch; not a malevolent disabling of an account and (BrowserUK, forgive me for even raising the possibility) in the belief that none of Buk's personae would have done something deserving of suspension.

update: s/but/and/; To correct my mistake about hdb's position.

Didn't we all have parents, surogates or teachers who abjured us to 'play nice' with others?

I upvoted as well and did not want to discourage anyone to do so as well!

So...   What was the problem (simply stated, and absent invective, please)?

Have you ever got an answer?

After all this tourette vocabulary I got curious too. :)

        Cheers Rolf

( addicted to the Perl Programming Language)

Have you ever got an answer?

No, I have not. I have had some /msgs from BrowserUk, which I must consider private exchanges unless he should say otherwise. In these, he made clear his conviction that skullduggery was afoot, but he did not feel able to be explicit about his reasons, so there is little that I could add even if I were free to do so.

I would like to have an answer. If this incident was vandalism on the part of some privileged individual, it would be of great concern to me. The timing of events was suggestive (Labo(u)r Day in N.A.), but of course Murphy's Law dictates that if something was going to break loose, that would be when it would happen. It seems unlikely that the procedures for some sort of "formal" forensic audit could be established to the satisfaction of all even if an audit trail exists that would support such an audit, which I doubt.

... all this tourette vocabulary ...

Well... yes. Of course, this place is neither a debating society nor the EU Parliament (maybe more like the Taiwanese Parliament), so if someone wants to jump up on a table once in a while and howl, I'm inclined to a bit of toleration, especially if it's someone who has made as many and as valuable contributions as BrowserUk. But even so...

(In fact, when the possibility of an impersonation was first raised, I thought I recognized certain characteristic markers. I went back and reviewed some of the effusions of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (shudder) to get the scent again, but no luck there.)
