Policy statement:

Sometimes I come here to ask a question, so in return I try to answer questions in SOPW. Recently I felt that some users were making inappropriate responses. It might not at all be obvious what kind of response qualifies as inappropriate, so here are my rules:-

When criticising an answer to a SOPW, be sure of the technical accuracy of what you are saying, by testing your assertion offline. An untested incorrect assertion given as criticism undermines my effort to help others and may cause you to be blocked.

perldoc and CPAN are designed to cater for all uses of a feature or module. Code examples found therein may be intended so, but code examples I submit are only intended to address a specific question. The assertion that an example for one SOPW should cater for all to the extent perldoc does has to be compared with the more relevant assertion that the code example should be simple enough to understand without exposing all kinds of potential problems the OP doesn't in fact need to solve. So replies that contravene this principle will be treated as a special case of trolling and offenders are apt to be blocked.
