    Which "epoch?"

To mention (blatantly lifted from WP) a few:

    • ( (31 Dec 01(BCE) 23:59:59) + 1 sec ) - MATLAB & Symbian
    • 01 January 01 - M$ .NET
    • 01 Jan 1601 - NTFS, COBOL, Win32/Win64
    • 01 Jan 1753 - M$ SQL Server
    • 30 Dec 1899 - M$ COM DATE, Object Pascal
    • 01 Jan 1904 - Mac OS thrru V9 & Palm OS
    • 31 Dec 1967- Pick OS
    • 01 Jan 1970 - Unix time & languages such as Perl, C, Java, JS
    • 01 Jan 1980 - DOS, OS/2, FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems
    • 01 Jan 2001 - Apple's Cocoa framework

Who wudda' thunk M$ would assert so many different epochs?.

If you didn't program your executable by toggling in binary, it wasn't really programming!

This being a Perl-related site, obviously the COBOL one.

package Cow { use Moo; has name => (is => 'lazy', default => sub { 'Mooington' }) } say Cow->new->name

:) Pick whichever one you like. I chose the Linux one, AprilJanuary 1, 1970, at 0000 Eastern TimeUTC.

I was coming up to my twelfth birthday, in grade 6 (form 2 at the boy's school I was attending in Westmount, Quebec). Apart from WFF 'N Proof, I didn't have much exposure to computers I could use. My Dad took my downtown to his office sometimes, where he'd do something incomprehensible with the IBM 370 mainframe that he was working on at the time. He'd leave me to entertain myself on the Keypunch machines.

Update: Of course, it was January, not April. Don't know where my brain was this morning. The caffeine deficiency is being rectified.

Update 2: Of course, the time zone should be UTC, and not Eastern Time. Zero for two, in case anyone's keeping track.

I chose the Linux one, April 1, 1970,

1st of April? Don't you mean the 1st of January?

Assuming the latter, at that exact moment I was in my parental home playing monopoly with my dad, 5 siblings, a couple of older sister's boyfriends and an uncle & aunt.

If you've ever played monopoly with a dozen people all mildly intoxicated (kids were allowed small glasses of Raisin Wine on Xmas and New Year), it gets very silly.

The neighbors must have thought we were mad; breaking out in to a chorus of happy birthday every time someone got the "It is your birthday, collect .." card.

        Eastern Time? What Dat? UTC-5? UTC+10? UTC+2?

But in any case, time_t 0 is at 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.

probably in bed (as epoch usually starts on midnight).
probably in bed (as epoch usually starts on midnight).

If you were on UTC time, sure. If you were on Eastern time, that would still be 7pm, and in California, it would be 4pm. :)

Actually, I was in a timezone near UTC that day(*) ... and was in an age that required me to go to bed early ;-)

(*) of course it depends of the epoch-value chosen

Partying like it was 1970! :-D

I picked elementary school, but I was actually in middle school and about to graduate that June. Was getting all sorts of excited about going to High School since most of the kids I grew up with thought that's when you became officially a teenager.

Boy was I disappointed to find out that being a teenager was nothing like the comic books.

I picked high school, but I was actually in junior high. (7th grade, to be precise.) Prior to junior high, you had one teacher all day, forever after you had one teacher per subject.

I was a runaway child process.
3 years 3 days. So somewhere between diapers and pre-school.

    Where...indeed. No - where.

Dec. 31 1969, 7pm EST, I lived in a very different world than today.

I lived in a place where you could still talk to living people who had personally seen the last days of the wild west, other people who had grown up in rural areas with neither running water nor electricity in North America - and to people who were inventing computers, all in the same day.

On Dec. 31 1969, 7pm EST, I lived in a place where one world was about to end, and a whole new one about to explode.

Whether that was a good thing or not depends on my mood one day to the next.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

I was probably sneaking out of bed to watch the crazy adults toast in the New Year. We lived in Hakata Japan at that time. Good times. Thanks for the poll!

at unix epoch I was snogging some young woman for auld lang syne, later I began to count my life out in 32b rollovers of seconds and so am heading for 4 giga seconds of life .
Marvin, the paranoid android, said something about the first 10 million years being pretty awful, I have a lot more fun than that and I sure made a lot of money out of Y2K

I started kindergarten in the fall of 1970. Technically, I was probably asleep at the particular instant we are referring to. :-)

I would be born 27 years, 5 months, and 30 days later.

Assuming UNIX epoch time, I was 4 and change, turning 5 in March. So I was sleeping. One (much) older brother, 2 younger brothers, and a sister on the way. But no tuba (yet).

Assuming the Unix epoch, I was in day care. Out of diapers for a while, but not quite in preschool. So I chose preschool. And right at the second of the epoch I was probably getting a bath before going to bed.

Hah. This is an interesting question. I think demographic surveys are fascinating.

I'll admit that I had to look up what "epoch == 0" meant. I'm do believe my mom and dad were both still in high middle school back then! They're practically the same age, separated by a mere 8 days.

I thought about it and I meant middle school. My mom and dad would have been 11 going on 12 back then. I think I was confused because I forgot how short each school period is, and I recalled my mom graduating in 1976.

Of course, I guess this question is more vague than I first gave it credit for, having actually read through some of the replies. I just went with the epoch related to the first result Google returned. I was assuming "Unix time." :P

At the precise moment of Unix epoch start, I was sitting on my bed thinking that something very important was ending along with the decade of the 1960's. I had no particular reason to think that, and no idea just how true it would prove to be, but I was looking at my (analog) clock radio at the time and watched the top of the 4 o'clock hour pass.

It's weird what sticks with you. And even weirder looking at the house where I grew up and seeing how different it looks today. It looks like just a shelter rather than a home, utilitarian and unloved. The pool was less than two years old then and not green then, but the lawns were vibrant green. There were fruit trees in the back yard, ornamental trees in the front, and the rest was not "low maintenance" as it is now.

It seemed like such a good thing, getting rid of Nixon a few years later.
