Is the server a process that you have created ?? if yes why not open a socket. This way you will not need telnet. perldoc sockets

    Note that the link you have is to a ripped off version of the old O'Reilly CD Bookshelf hosted in a country where copyright law is likely nonexistent. Some of the authors are contributors to this site. If I were you I'd remove the link. Just saying.
