If someone wants to implement a pure-perl zlib/gzip/deflate compat compression library you'd need to look at http://www.xach.com/lisp/salza2 a common lisp library which does this without any external library.
The matching pure-lisp decompressor is chipz at http://method-combination.net/lisp/chipz/
