FWIW, you can use wine on linux to run ActivePerl with Win32::OLE to automate Excel .... but you'll need wine/excel installed of course :)

OTOH, Re^5: Converting doc to txt without WIN32::OLE says OpenOffice::UNO or unoconv - Convert between any document format supported by LibreOffice/OpenOffice.

    i am having my site running on unix but as wine creates its own environment,

    do i need to shift my whole site on wine environment...?
