This thread appears to have become a "what's Perl" / "How would you define/describe Perl". To that end;

Perl is the Duct tape, bobby pin, chewing gum, metal coat hanger, bit of bailing wire found in every field box. Something, few, if any other language can lay claim to. But Perl can also be considered, micro calipers, and sophisticated diagnostics equipment. In all, speaks to a far wider audience of needs, than I think any other language. No?

Which all perhaps speaks to "Why so much hate?". see; envy (of/by other languages).
