You need to be using a browser that can accept cookies and you have to let your browser do so.

You didn't say which browser you were using (or which OS, for that matter), so I have to guess. Since all I have at hand is Win32, here's what to check if you're using:

    • Netscape 4.7/6: Choose Edit | Preferences | Advanced and then make certain that the Cookies panel is *not* set to Disable Cookies.

    • IE 5.x (p'tui): Choose Tools | Options | Custom. Scroll through the list until you see Cookies and, again, make certain they're *not* disabled

    • Opera 5.x: Choose File | Preferences and then select Privacy. Again, ensure that some cookies can be accepted.

    • And so on...

If you're certain that cookies will be accepted, then you might check out the little story called For all your nodelet sorrow. That might also help.

Finally, make sure you're using the same domain suffix to login and to locate nodes. For example, if I log into perlmonks.org and then try to access nodes from perlmonks.com, the latter will not see the cookie logging me into the other--meaning I'll have to log in again.

Hope one of these things helps....I'm out of (reasonable) ideas...

i'm using 5.5 without problems, and 6 at work as well without problem. have you tried having your authentication information saved as a cookie? i'll admit to some puzzlement here because i had a similar problem when i first started hanging out here. when it cleared up i assumed that some change had been made at the site, now i'm wondering what i did to fix it. (grin) i can say that i haven't had the problem since i automatically checked the remember me box.

    Well,

while I think that this post would be better suited in the SoPW section, rather than the Discussion section, I will try to help out anyway.

From the information you have given, it is somewhat hard to figure out what would be causing this, other than (what I suspect the problem is,) the browser that you are logging in with.

What browser are you logging in with? If you are using Internet Explorer 5.x, it has typically had some problems when viewing perlmonks.org in different ways. This could simply be yet another IE problem (if it is what you are using.)

That is all I can think of as being the culprit of your anonymous monk problem, hopefully we can be of more help, if you can describe a bit more of what you are using, so we can troubleshoot the problem!

This was originally posted to SOPW, but I moved it on the basis that it was not someone seeking enlightenment on a matter of Perl, but rather someone with a question about the Monastery and how it works. Given that the Site HOWTO suggests that site-related discussion should be posted under the Discussion section, the post was moved accordingly.

Before pointing to a specific browser issue, I think it might be more prudent to have the anonymous monk check his username and password details and had them resent via email to ensure that they are entering them correctly - The simpliest explanation is most likely the cause of the problem. Failing this, think more laterally - Cookies? Required for login. Are they enabled on the anonymous monks' system?

The only reason I suggest these more simple explanations is that if the cause of this problem really was an issue with Internet Explorer 5.x, I feel that many of us would have experienced this problem already previously, particularly given the wide-spread usage of Internet Explorer 5.x.

Ooohhh, Rob no beer function well without!
If in doubt blame Bill Gates, thats what I always say......and yes i am using IE5.5 Baz

Check your cookie settings and any cookie filters you have set up.

Also, you might look carefully at the URL. I've heard of problems with people starting out at perlmonks.com and getting HREF'ed to perlmonks.org (or whatever many aliases this place has) and that loses cookies.
