The method you mention here is called retrograde analysis and is e.g. applied to chess endgames. There have been quite some advancements in recent years proving for example a forced mate in 223 (!) moves from any starting position for a six pieces endgame with king, rook and bishop defeating king and two knights. -- Hofmator
