Transient nodelet problem

by hippo (Bishop)
on Sep 30, 2020 at 12:37 UTC ( [id://11122365]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I've just encountered an odd problem whereby the nodelets stopped part-way through. Looking at https://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=11122359 the Nodelets only included the XP nodelet and the first half of the Approval Nodelet - it stopped just after the "moderation history" link. The rest of the nodelets were absent as was the page footer ("PerlMonks lovingly hand-crafted by Tim Vroom.", etc.). I had not been logged out, according to the rest of the page. To see if it was reproducible I opened the same page in a fresh tab and the nodelets all appeared as they usually do and the footer had returned.

Both requests would have probably been made at 13:27 BST (UTC +1) or so today.

I've never seen this before but it might, if related, shed more light on the intermittent 500s. HTH, either way.

    G'day hippo,

I have encountered this behaviour previously, but only rarely. Reloading the page has always fixed the issue. It's been a while since it last happened; I don't recall a new tab being necessary.

I've also noticed, on a few occasions, that when I first access the site, prior to logging in, the CSS has not loaded or has only partially loaded (at least that's what it looks like). Again, reloading the page fixes the problem.

I've generally put this down to an overloaded Internet; especially with so many people in lock-down at the moment and streaming videos and the like to pass the time.

Some info if this needs further investigation: I almost always use www.perlmonks.org and a Firefox browser (I generally keep up-to-date with latest versions: currently, 81.0).

Thanks for the extra info, kcott.

I don't recall a new tab being necessary.

For clarity, I used a new tab so that I could quickly switch between the page with the problem and the same page without and thereby perform an eye-diff. That was the only reason for doing so.
