in reply to TPF's Marketing Strategy for the Next Two Years

Well, as far as I can see, no branding guidelines have been published yet.

This site's footer says something like PerlMonks somehow became entangled with The Perl Foundation or PerlMonks is a proud member of the The Perl Foundation but I don't know what that actually means beyond "it's being linked to from perl.org's Community site". Are there any other connections, like funding, which might make TPF believe they could require a style change?

In their working document there's a note that PerlMonks "pushed back" when talking about consistent sites. Maybe we should find out which monks did the pushing, and why? After all, changing a website layout causes some effort for which some volunteers need to find time for. There is a chance that those volunteers just fail to turn up, and it is also likely that any change causes criticism by some who like this site's 20th century style.

So I'd just wait and see whether and when a branding guideline appears, what support TPF is going to provide, and what the consequences would be if PerlMonks continue to push back.

As a user of this site, I actually couldn't care less.

Indeed, this is something I've been wondering for a while now. I think TPF pays whatever bills PerlMonks might have, though I believe we're still getting hosting from Pair for free.
If TPF doesn't, who would? But maybe we don't have any bills anyway...

Yes; and the About page says that PerlMonks is an "affiliate" of TPF, and that TPF "carries the legal responsibility for" PerlMonks.

After some digging, I've found historical evidence that TPF was actually created by PerlMonks, Perl Mongers, and Yet Another Society — that last being the organization which ran the conferences and such. This move was announced on 2001-07-27.

So however tenuous the connection might be now, there can be no doubt that there is some kind of connection. It still remains to be seen exactly what that affiliation looks like on a concrete level.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.

In German law it's pretty clear - and I think it can't be much different in the US - that every website has to provide information about the responsible legal person.

Especially as there is a real risk for a site that size to get involved in a lawsuit, more so when publishing content from total strangers.

Now I was always under the impression that Tim Vroom was the original person, who "held the keys", and that he only shared/delegated the administration of this construct to the other gods.

But at some point he might have thought, that he didn't want to carry all the risk anymore and sought the legal umbrella of the TPF.

The fact that it's not better defined in writing here - including your own confusion - seems to indicate a deliberate gray zone. And the Perl community was always inclined to a certain hippy-like laissez-faire way.

But the easiest way to clarify, is to ask Vroom himself. It must be in his vital interest to know, who might need to pay for the lawyers. I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.

        edit

My bet is that there is an - at least informal - agreement that TPF forms that protective umbrella. Because that's what the TPF was created for.

But that doesn't mean that "they" have the power to decide about the design. Whatever "they" means.

        Cheers Rolf

    Hello haj,

    > Maybe we should find out which monks did the pushing, and why?

that's problably me. You can read my answer to the announcement here at pm then I was reached here via private message and then via mail by the survey organizer.

I told them that perlmonks is still in the list of support websites in the official docs (where I found it many years ago). I also pointed them to a recent example of newcomer support (iirc the first post of brother Bod was this one).

Sincerely when I saw facebook and not perlmonks I felt offended: our site still is the best resource in internet about perl.

That said, if I provoked unwanted side effects, they were unintended and my peneance will be to write one zillion lines of php :)

Somewhat bizarrely the working document includes this nugget from Diab Jerius:

No place to send people to for cool uses of Perl.

If only such a place existed, eh?

monktainer - (patch) (2013-03-15) is where I added the requested mention of "the Perl programming language".

monktainer - (patch) (2006-03-29) is where I replaced the reference to Yet Another Society with The Perl Foundation. However, the reference was already out of date by several years by that time.

Thanks for the link to the working doc. I like this bit: "consistent brand, not necessarily consistent look."
