Dave Cross has written a fairly brief article explaining what's been going on with Perl development and releases in recent years, highlighting compatibility and new features.

You can check it out at https://stackoverflow.blog/2022/09/08/this-is-not-your-grandfathers-perl/.

All of this meant that for almost twenty years, Perl had no next version number to use. And this has, unsurprisingly, led to a large part of the industry assuming that Perl hasnít changed much over that time.

Perl 6. The Perl that killed perl.

1984 was supposed to be a warning,
    not a manual!
