What do you use perl for?

    • for fun
    • l'art pour l'art
    • garbage in, garbage out
    • whitehat stuff
    • blackhat stuff
    • keep a business running I don't understand
    • keep my own business running
    • make money
    • Save the world! (how?)
    • Other (please elaborate)

As usual: a combination of many of those. I fist look at perl with *any* job-related programming/scripting issue. I also look at perl when trying to express a new idea. The I us it to improve my CPAN modules and to compare to other languages. In all of these FUN! is the most important factor.

That was 23 years ago ... it would be interesting to see if something has changed in this time ...

The PerlMonks site front end has

    • Too much JavaScript
    • Not enough JavaScript
    • Just the right amount of JavaScript
    • Not enough WebPerl

(edited to clarify that this is about the page rendering and not about the topics in the actual content)

    Should POD gain Markdown features?
    • No.
    • New POD block that just parses Markdown-style bullet list notation
    • Implement rendering for "=begin markdown"
    • New POD block "=markdown"
    • Directive that causes POD to parse Markdown in all blocks, with HTML output semantics
    • Introduce "POD2" which enhances POD with Markdown syntax shortcuts, keeping POD/nroff semantics
    • Completely replace POD with Markdown in new style of Perl comment; use 3rd party Markdown tooling
(related to the recent p5p thread)
      • Implement a good processor for an already existing =begin markdown POD command

      map{substr$_->[0],$_->[1]||0,1}[\*||{},3],[[]],[ref qr-1,-,-1],[{}],[sub{}^*ARGV,3]
Good call, added. Also clarified the others a bit.
Java recently gained native support for using Markdown in Javadoc comments.

    chatterbot is...

    • Great! It updates last hour of cb and helps me join a discussion.
    • The! Worst! Thing! Ever! It always ignores my self-upvotes for cb stats!!?!
    • Somewhat useful in settling debates with coin flips and dice rolls.
    • A mystery to me. I guess i should read the documentation on its homenode some day.
    • Chatterbot? Nobody told me about it!
    • Not my cup of tea. I do not do that live chat thingie...

What's the best IDE you've ever used?
    • Komodo
    • Visual Studio
    • JetBrains
    • I've never used one
Any others? (need not be Perl specific)

Talking about editor wars, VI's philosophy is to use external not internal tools, so by definition it's pretty much the opposite of an I DE.

Although I haven't used it this millennium, LSE was an absolute necessity for doing proper dev work on VMS back in the day.

Not that I would recommend it, but if you have Eclipse in the list (which I loathe), then certainly Netbeans should be on there too (also not used for the last 3 years)

Delphi. Hands down the best ever created for any language, even though I've only used 5 languages professionally. I instinctively know that nobody will ever surpass Delphi.
