I was helping my teenage kids run a Majordomo account and it kept crashing when it tried to send stuff to bad addresses. There must be dozens of Perl scripts to validate email addresses, I thought. But I couldn't find one so I taught myself Perl so I could write one.
That was 14 years and thousands of lines of code ago.
Once upon a time, a very long time ago, I was a COBOL programmer. I was terrible at it and soon got a proper job. These days I am a partner in e-commerce company eButtonz and, ironically, spend a lot of my time up to my elbows in Perl.
Before I discovered Perl, I never understood why anyone should love a programming language. Now I know.
I am old and fat and live in Alton, England.
