I don't know, but I just emailed The Perl Foundation to make them aware of it...

Update: Although I guess the copyright trademark (thanks LanX) on the name itself would probably be Larry Wall's?

One needs a trademark (which the foundation has) not a copyright.

Next question if there is a possible overlap of context.

If two brands are sold in totally different areas like "cat food" and "sports cars" it can become difficult. Also depending on legislation.

I read that a Polish lemonade named "John Lemon" had to change its name after Yoko Ono interfered.

Question is if Perl it's a sufficiently big "pop star".

And the possibility to smoke Perl on a PyCon shouldn't be under estimated... ;)

I'll go and buy popcorn. This is going to be interesting if the foundation choses to interfere :-)

      holli

You can lead your users to water, but alas, you cannot drown them.

Well, VinsWorldcom made a good point here that there are/were actually a bunch of trademarks on things called "Perl"... apparently including hair nets and "direct and mail order sales of sausages and luncheon meats" :-) (ok, at least those two are expired/abandoned)

Their product is just smoke, while Tim Toady's perl is smoke AND mirrors. Clearly Foggily superior.

There's some pretty good marketing material at this site. For example, Our Story shares their reason for choosing the name PERL:

We wanted the name to reflect who we are and what we strive to be: Compact, Precious, Elegant. It's so simple it seems inevitable. Like shucking for pearls there's nothing easy about finding a Pearl, but for those who do, it's a special reward in itself.

Followed by six reasons you should choose PERL:

    • Beautiful
    • Simple
    • Intelligent
    • Delicious
    • Different
    • Easy

The only nitpick I have is the case they chose for the name PERL. Apart from that ... looks good and keep up the good work! :)

    Heh

    OUR STORY

PERL was designed with a vision in mind. To create the ultimate vaping experience for everyday people. A device where simplicity, beauty and technology meet. As a group of quirky creatives and vape enthusiasts, creating the PERL wasn’t a choice. It was a necessity.

Well let's hope the trademark was secured. .. :)

      Let's see:

Yeah, pretty much a direct rip-off.

      UPDATE: Perl Trademarks

        Uh oh

We might have some trouble two versions down the road from now...

PERL-8 INSULATION FOR STEEL PIPE CONSISTING OF A LIGHTWEIGHT CEMENTITIOUS INORGANIC MATERIAL WITH A WATER-IMPERMEABLE OUTER JACKET… Owned by: SHAW INDUSTRIES LTD. Serial Number: 73611113

Let's see if Python follows suit. But, you probably have to breathe a specific (one) way (to do it!), or it won't recognize when you last exhaled, and it stops working...

BTW, this is probably just a typo: Mother of Pearl. Else we should seriously consider to inform the Spanish Inquisition ASAP.

Seriously? You should be ashamed of yourself. What an A-hole

Coming from one, your sentiment means a great deal to me. I'm honored.

        $PM = "Perl Monk's";

    #define flame ON

Having lost both of my grandfathers and my father-in-law to cigarette smoking, in the most-gruesome way imaginable ... and I would have lost my father as well, had he not witnessed what happened to my maternal grandfather ... I grieve to see the wildly-successful popularization of “vaping.™”

It is even being popularized as a treatment(!) for COPD emphysema.

What is very-conveniently left out of the newspapers, and by-and-large scrubbed from the Internet, is the actual and bitter truth:   that “electronic cigarettes” deliver a concentration of pure-nicotine far faster than a burning cigarette ever could, and that emphysema develops far more rapidly.   Nicotine addicts who use this method have irreversible lung damage normally seen in thirty-year multi-pack-a-day smokers.

The tobacco industry managed to keep all of the dangers of smoking “out of view” for many decades until public awareness finally caught up with them.   Far from being defeated, however, they simply turned to a different method to – in this case, “main-line”(!) their vile poison into an entirely new (and, likewise-unsuspecting) generation of addict’s lungs.   Knowing full well that these new addicts, too, will never seriously consider that “it could will happen to them.”   Until, one day, the awful trap snaps shut, and they are left to drown in what’s left of their own juices.

    #undef flame

Sorry for being off-topic ... and I don’t really mean for this topic-fork to continue.   It’s just that ... some wounds will never heal.

Is there any topic in the world which you do not get wrong?

Vaping is much safer than mass produced cigarettes, it's helping smokers quit, and it's lowering adoption of smoking. There are scientific studies showing all three points.

Footnote: I neither vape nor smoke (anything). And have also, like just about everyone in the world, lost family to cancer caused by smoking.

        Thats just spam/ads/propaganda

vaping A 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) report found that the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of vaping for quitting smoking is "scant and of low certainty".

Nicotine isn't what causes cancer in cigarettes. Vaping delivers the addictive part of the cigarette without the carcinogenics. I mean I double checked this in a 3 second google search. I kind of want to know what you think of 9/11 then.

Three thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you're god damn right I'm living in the fucking past

As much as I am not a fan of that user

How the hell can you argue the tobacco industry is honest in disclosing health risks for your lungs?

        two quotes

Among flavoring compounds emitted in some e-cigarette aerosols are 2,3-pentanedione and diacetyl, which NIOSH has linked to causing obliterative bronchiolitis, a devastating lung disease in workers

Further research is needed on the health risks of e-cigarettes, but available evidence suggests harmful effects.

1206216: Please keep this in mind as we all strive to reduce the noise-pollution on this site.
