bennierounder has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Guys it's been a while.

I'm currently building a WordPress online shop and I'm wanting to build an online quote system using perl because perl is the language I'm most familiar with.

I could make a subdomian and have the quote system separate, but I would like to integrate what I do with WordPress and carry over information from one of the WordPress pages over to another page built in perl on the same site. Is this possible and if so can someone point me in the right direction to some literature I can read in order to use perl within WordPress.

For example, I want to build a web shop in perl then the sizes the customer enters into the boxes on the site and the product they select needs to go over to a perl programme for a few calculations then return the results back to the WordPress page

Thank you in advance if you can help

I haven't used it at all, but I notice WordPress::CLI and a bunch of other modules in the WordPress name space on CPAN. Maybe there is something there to help you? Fair warning: the module hasn't been updated in quite a while and has a lot of fails on cpantesters so it may not be very useful!

It might be better to choose a CMS written in Perl and write it as a plugin. Google search suggested some, but I can't give a personal recomendation.

You could use an iframe to incorporate the Perl part. Read from the database, make your calculations and send the data back to the iframe via websockets.

Why use WordPress .. at all?

Because it's easy to make an ecommerce site look good, quickly! What would you recommend?
