Well, if that is the entire extent of your opinion, then so be it.   I herewith hold my head above the trenches, specifically in order to give “the usual seven-or-so of you” three juicy downvote-targets in my humble efforts to answer the OP’s 2018 - 1977 = 41-year-old concern.   (Now, there, don’t you feel better now?)

Sometimes, it helps to be (koff, koff ...) actually, more than 41 years old . . .

Now, I don’t intend to be childish about this, neither to suggest that I am the oldest one here, but, given that the Unix® operating system had appeared on the scene a mere 7-or-so years earlier, I really do believe that there properly ought to be no down-votes with regard to my mention of an approach that would have been applied – very productively – to identical problems half-a-century ago.   Such that its general approach inspired(!) the language that everyone here now uses, in the engineering mind of its original creator.

    Far from it!

I found that particular statement "hilarious" because you seem to waste an inordinate amount of your valuable time italicising, bolding and underscoring your posts. Perhaps you would do better to devote that time to writing and posting code that compiles and runs to produce the required results, which you should also post to demonstrate those skills that you so often allude to. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, you might have done this on occasion but I can't recall any instance where you have.

Going back to the "extemporaneous" solution you originally posted, there's nothing particularly wrong with the approach. The execution, however, leaves a lot to be desired, e.g. initialising my @lines = []; gives us an array whose first element is an empty anonymous array rather than an empty array. The prevalence of these "beginner's" mistakes render those of your posts containing code worthless and dangerously misleading for genuine beginners who visit this site.

I am actually considerably older than 41, having started my IT career in 1977. I am now retired but still enjoy tinkering with code, Perl code in particular, and producing solutions to help others.

    Cheers,

    JohnGG

*Thirty or so. The few upvotes you gain are from new monks who know no better or are pity votes from those who cannot stand the spectacle of YAH. I suppose I RFC:MUST amend my directive created specifically for you, COGTFO, to WCOGTFO. Unambiguously: you are the laziest, worst contributor here and I'd take 10 Wassercratses and Logicuses EACH in place of you.

      ... I'd take 10 ... and [He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named]ses EACH in place of you.

(Gasp!) Your Mother! Don't say that! Don't even think that! The only advantage of mumble over sundialsvc4 is that the former no longer infests these precincts in any guise. That blessing is squandered if we beckon him back, even backhandedly. Speak of the devil...
