Dear Monks,

Please revert this ridiculous idea and restore readability to Perlmonks!

Thank you

Just change your settings after login again.

It seems that replies to a post are always linked appropriately to the original post that they are replies to, if you use the reply links when posting! Regardless of settings, it is easily readable!

Posting correctly and usefully instead of posting quickly is a great way to raise the profile of a post, and that is quite a nice benefit.

I think when dealing with big (sub) threads, it could be beneficial to have some additional JS to help navigate.

        Like

        • folding replies
        • scroll to parent
        • vote without reload
        this could also include
        • change order
I already started writing a nodelet-hack for this, but alas too many projects and not enough time.

        Cheers Rolf

Replies listed out of order are not easily readable because the best reply often refers to a previous reply which has been suppressed. This is confusing and annoying. It makes the site seem very broken.

Agreed. The fix is not a super high burden, but should not be imposed nonetheless.

Iím still waiting to see an example of the problem to make up my own mind if it is a problem or just sour generic fruit. Do you have a couple to cite since the OP has declined to do so?

It's not that sour, just browse as anonymous. I don't know that it destroys the threads, probably going too far, but I Just don't think it makes sense to have a conversation out of chronological order. I'll sample a couple selected best nodes.

What do MOST logged in users do? How do you yourself order replies? If you prefer to read them in chronological order, and you being a discerning and rational person obviously prefer the best, then it would be a courtesy to extend that to visitors. Typically up-votes follow chronologically, so in a lot of cases it makes no difference. It's probably the most annoying for people very familiar with Perlmonks and don't log in because it's not convenient or quit logging in altogether.
