in this case two options with /s modifier

DB<11> m/.*(.|\n)/s,print "<$1>" for "123","abc\n","abc\nd" <3>< ><d> DB<12> m/.*(.)/s,print "<$1>" for "123","abc\n","abc\nd" <3>< ><d> DB<13>
