FTP for Perl 4.0

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi, In Perl 5.06x, I able to use "use net::FTP". Is there a compatible function or routine in Perl 4.0? I need the script to login as a valid user ID and password and do a get or put of a file. Thanks, Lap

    ...able to use "use net::FTP"...

    Could be that you're spelling Net::FTP with the incorrect case. Are you sure its perl 4.0 (in that case, I'm not sure what version might work, you might check the change log (and then the CPAN archives if its not in the authors CPAN directory) for Net::FTP and see if it goes back that far). (update: Hmm, the libnet bundle seems to start arount 1997, and perl5 was a few years before that, so you're probably out of luck).
    Anyway, if you don't mind my asking, what's preventing you from upgrading perl? As you probably know, 4.0 is rather archaic :-)

      Net::FTP definitely won't work under perl4, because perl4 doesn't support modules! :D There may be an ftp library that works in perl4 (like cgi-lib.pl is perl4's CGI library), but I don't know where one would find it.

    Without being too unkind to you (and others who still use Perl 4.0), questions of the kind "what can I use in Perl 4.0 are similar to "what can I use under MS/DOS 2.11?" Seriously, you are using a very old version of software. Were Perl a commercial produce, Perl 4.0 would have dropped from support a few years ago. and considering Perl 5.x is free . . .

    I have always had the policy of not being in the first 5% of those upgrading to a new version of software, and not being in the last 5% to upgrade as well.

      Probably one reason why we still see questions about Perl 4 is that some vendors of commercial Unices still bundle Perl 4 instead of Perl 5 with their OSes.

    Perl 4.x is over seven years out of date. It is completely unsupported and there are CERT security advisories about it. Given that Perl 5 is available for free from http://www.perl.com, there is absolutly no good reason to carry on using Perl 4.
