About MeLet's see, where to begin? I'm a 21-year-old (born on New Year's Eve) recent college graduate, currently in search of my "dream job". Well, let's take it from the beginning. I'm an Army Brat and was born in Oklahoma (no laughing) and have lived in 15 different places across America and 2 places in Europe. For those of you who have lived in the same place your entire life, I can?t even begin to imagine how you do it. I need the change; it has become a part of me. I've experienced a variety of different regions of our country and have been fortunate enough to live/travel all across Europe. If you think of a country in Europe, chances are I've been there. I love to travel, especially in Europe (they make it so easy) and experience the various cultures. My favorite, however, Deutschland!
I attended Muhlenberg College, a small Liberal Arts school up near Philly. If you've never heard of it, don't worry, you certainly are not the first. Imagine landing an incredible internship with a big company out in California and having to explain at least a hundred times the who/what/where/when/why/how of your school to all the MIT/Stanford/UCLA/etc students. Muhlenwhat? Muhlenwho? I've heard it all. So why did I choose to go to Muhlenberg instead of a top-notch tech school? Simply put, I initially had no interest in being a computer geek, but rather a bio nerd. I went to college with the intentions of becoming a Neurologist (the brain is just so damn cool). Then someone in the registrar made the mistake of allowing me to sign up for a C++ programming course. I've been a GEEK ever since!
GeEk StUfFAs I mentioned, I've been interested in computers since my early college days. No, I'm not one of those who wrote their first program at age 2. I started with C++ and soon found myself writing programs for fun. I could go to a lame fraternity party or I could stay in and accomplish/learn something. Don't get me wrong, I was quite the "social butterfly", but I was also a geek. I stuck with the Computer Science major at college (along with German Language and Literature). Our curriculum focused initially on C++. We also learned other programming languages (Ada, Assembly, C, Visual C++, Visual Basic) and various computer topics (Operating Systems, Networks, Theory, Data Structures, a whole slew of Algorithms, etc). The curriculum has taught me quite a bit of useful information, but I often wonder if I would be better off had I transferred to a tech school. Oh well, I guess everything happens for a reason.
I started with Perl when I thought I would possibly need it for an internship position where creating dynamic websites was my task. My aunt had just recently sent me a gift certificate for Amazon, so I decided to order a book on Perl and CGI, just to see what the language had to offer. From that point on, I haven?t looked back. I love the elegance and power of the language. I?ve picked up several more books since then and spend a lot of time on PM.org in order to learn anything I can relative to Perl. The path to Perl wisdom is a long, but interesting one. I?m sure I?ll love every step I take!
DeutschlandI lived in Aschaffenburg for 2 years, Wiesbaden for nearly 5, and studied in Bonn for nearly a year. Each time I was there, I LOVED it. I love being in Europe and I love experiencing the different cultures. While in Germany I traveled across the continent with my family, learned the German language, and made friends all over Europe. It was an incredible experience, and all though I was a bit skeptical at first, I wouldn't trade it in for the world. I'm currently considering moving back to Europe, if I can land a good job in Germany. If things don't work out there, I certainly will travel back to Europe the next chance I get!
